What Is The Saddest New Car For Sale?

CountersteerYour true stories of good and bad things that happen in cars.

Most new cars come off the factory floor and get delivered to the showroom only to sit for a short time then get taken home by some happy buyer. But some cars just don’t get any love, they sit for months or even years. The discounts come off, and yet, they’re still there.

The saddest new car for sale has to be the Cadillac ELR. For some reason, Cadillac, in their infinite wisdom, decided to take a Chevy Volt, make it less practical and over twice as expensive.

Here is a 2014—you read that right, brand new 2014 model

2014 Cadillac ELR Lease Deal Announced, Early Buyers Get Free Home Charger

As an incentive to the first 2014 Cadillac ELR customers, Cadillac will provide a free 240-volt charging system and complimentary home installation. For those who prefer a leasing option to the ELR’s lofty $75,995 starting price, Cadillac also announced it is offering an ultra-low-mileage lease (which Cadillac says is about 12,540 miles per year) included with the same extended warranty for the lithium-ion battery.

The 2014 Cadillac ELR, powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and dual electric motors, can be charged via the fast-charging 240-volt home unit in about 4.5 hours. As an alternative, customers can also use a regular 120-volt electrical outlet to charge the ELR’s 16.5 kWh battery pack. The 2014 Cadillac ELR can travel approximately 38 miles on solely electric energy, and has a total range of 340 miles using hybrid power.

Engine swaps are one thing; complete powertrain replacements are another.

But if your business is yanking range-extended electric running gear out of a stunning-looking car from a now-bankrupt company, and replacing it with Corvette power, there are two ways you can go.

Swaps, new cars

You can wait for the limited universe of Fisker Karma owners–about 2,000 or so–to need new powertrains, or you can buy unfinished bodies from the company itself and sell them as brand-new Destinos.

The diesel SUV, which is the automaker’s base offering in the GLS range, is slightly different than the 2016 version that was sold last year and hasn’t yet been approved for sale by the environmental agency.

“As you’re aware, emissions certification—especially for diesels—has been a hot topic,” Mercedes spokesman Brian Cotter said in an email.

2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid: technical details revealed

2016 Cadillac CT6

2016 Cadillac CT6

The second-generation Chevrolet Volt is important not only as a high-volume plug-in hybrid, but also because components from its Voltec powertrain are designed to be used in other GM models.

Last year, General Motors unveiled the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, with a powertrain very similar to the Volt’s.

Around the same time, it also unveiled the Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid.

It’s been assumed that this plug-in version of Cadillac’s new large sedan would also borrow heavily from the Volt.

And now that we have full technical details on the CT6 powertrain, Cadillac has confirmed that it uses quite a few components from the Chevy—but with many changes dictated by its rear-wheel drive platform and sportier bent.
