Scion C-HR Concept
Has Toyota’s youth-oriented sub-brand, Scion, failed, or merely timed out in its mission?
Jim Lentz, Toyota’s CEO for North America, announced yesterday in a video statement that the brand will be phased out after the 2016 model year, with

The Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal began making headlines over six months ago, so you might think that the worst of it would be over by now.
You would be wrong.
In recent days, VW’s U.S. dealers and its German executives have met at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention in Las Vegas; the Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen, submitting several well-known commercials as evidence against the automaker; and

The Kia Cadenza, is already a great car for comfort-oriented sedan shoppers—especially those who aren’t super-brand-conscious yet want a luxury-car feel and feature set without breaking the bank. And it stands to get even better with the fully redesigned version—first shown at the 2016 New York Auto Show—that’s on the way for 2017.
That’s because Kia takes aim at two of the outgoing Cadenza’s main weaknesses: It’s a little conservatively styled, and not all that much fun to drive.
Like Kia’s most recent models, the 2017 Kia Cadenza ups its game inside, where it counts, with a cabin that’s even more focused on hand-crafted details and upgraded materials. And with Kia’s first 8-speed automatic transmission in a front-wheel-drive vehicle, the Cadenza also makes gains in efficiency and drivability.
From the outside, the 2017 Kia Cadenza looks a good deal more elegant than its predecessor, and perhaps a little sportier, too. The new

The 2017 Toyota Corolla will take its well-deserved, yearlong parade lap this year. After all, the name has been around for 50 years and adorned more than 40 million cars worldwide, according to Toyota. Over its span, the Corolla has epitomized basic, trouble-free, and relatively comfortable transportation over 11 generations, with a few memorable forms—AE86 anyone?
This year, Toyota adds available active-safety technology to better compete with a growing class of compacts. While the current version isn’t what you might call charming, it’s more interesting and engaging that its anodyne predecessors.
For 2017, there are essentially no changes to the Corolla, save for a few new trims and a 50th Anniversary Limited Edition. Only 8,000 of those special models will be sold, in only three colors. They feature unique 17-inch alloy wheels, a black interior with “Black Cherry” contrast stitching, dash and door accents, and special floor mats and badges. The

The 2017 Nissan Titan is an all-new, much needed, full-size truck for the automaker whose previous entry had aged beyond relevancy. Made in Mississippi and available in so-called “XD” grade—more on that later—the 2017 Nissan Titan is fronted by a V-6, or an available 5.6-liter V-8.
The new, “regular” Titan is a followup to the Titan XD, which went on sale in the U.S. last year. That truck is a diesel-powered scalpel meant to slice a niche above light-duty trucks, but below traditional heavy-duty offerings from other truckmakers. The Titan XD offers more hauling and towing capability than, say, a Ford F-150, but well below some Super Duty trucks. Time will tell if Nissan executed its “tweener” plan well.
The non-XD Titan bowed at the Chicago Auto Show and will go on sale this summer as a 2017 model-year pickup. The Titan and Titan XD are both constructed in the same

The 2017 Kia Niro breaks new ground as the first dedicated hybrid crossover SUV–which is to say, there’s no gasoline-only Niro. It joins the world’s limited roster of dedicated hybrids, which is headed by the Toyota Prius, now in its fourth generation. The latest entry besides the Niro is the Hyundai Ioniq hatchback, which shares underpinnings with the new Niro.
Given the surging popularity of car-based crossover utility vehicles, the subcompact Niro may find an audience among buyers of small SUVs who want high fuel efficiency–Kia is targeting an EPA rating of 50 mpg combined–but avoid conventional hatchbacks. While the newest Kia has a crossover shape, however, Kia has not yet mentioned offering all-wheel drive–but we suspect it’s on the way. And for the smallest SUVs, often used mostly in cities, that may not be as much of a drawback as for larger family
