Waring’s Stam invited to U14 National Camp

Holly Stam, an eighth grader at Waring School, has been invited to take part in the U14 National Team training camp in Portland, Oregon on June 1-8. The Ipswich resident has played club soccer with Aztec since she was on the U11 team.

Stam is one of 48 elite players including five goalkeepers invited to the camp. The girls will stay in dorms and work with Youth National Team coach April Kater and other members of the U.S. soccer coaching staff. Stam was identified as one of the top players in the country in her age group and received a letter from Whitney Stipetich, director of soccer operations at the University of Portland.

The philosophy of identifying talent has been changed and the focus is more on the grassroots level now. Instead of one large camp for a hundred players this year there will be three, including another in Florida later this

eBay Find: 1949 Buick Sedanette With ‘Rat Rod’ Potential

Somebody is going to soon open their garage door and have a green 1949 Buick Sedanette nestled just inside. The post-war Buick was for sale in Berkeley, Massachusetts, with the winning bid being a casual $5,655.

According to the current owner, the Buick has “some rust in the rocker panels, trunk and floors solid, passenger window cracked” and is equipped with all of the moldings except the left rear quarter. It also has skirts and “brand new visor” and it is noted that the interior could use an overhaul, but is decent enough to leave be if so desired.

The small block Chevy 350, Chevy Turbo 350 transmission, and 10-bolt rear are intact, and the car has rack and pinion steering but is missing power steering lines. The owner doesn’t have time for the Buick because of other projects and is selling it as he bought it.

He mentions that the car needs head

Veterans blame planes used to spray Agent Orange for illnesses

WASHINGTON — Nearly three dozen rugged C-123 transport planes formed the backbone of the U.S. military’s campaign to spray Agent Orange over jungles hiding enemy soldiers during the Vietnam War. And many of the troops who served in the conflict were compensated for diseases associated with their exposure to the toxic defoliant.

Rejuvenated thrower – Eagle

The glory is gone but the adrenaline still flows a bit and the competitive enjoyment remains for Andover’s Ralph Bakkensen.

The 64-year-old attorney is a former shot putter and discus thrower from track crazy (Portland) Oregon who was a state high school champion and then threw at Stanford courtesy of a full track and field scholarship.

Back then, track and field was in his blood, thanks largely to his older brother by seven years, John, who was a discus star in high school and later went to Harvard, where he set numerous school records in the throwing events. He had a best throw of 201-1 and just missed making the Olympic team.

“He was my idol, my champion, and I wanted to be like him,” said Bakkensen, who specialized more in the shot put “because my grandmother said we shouldn’t be competing in the same event.”

“I wanted to be like him and, while

Local family works to bring injured loved one home

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Kyle McGrath’s father was hit by the minivan. His father was not involved in the accident.

When Brandt McGrath travelled to Portland, Oregon, to attend his sister’s wedding, he never imagined that he would have to spend the next several weeks in the hospital at his brother’s bedside.

Kyle McGrath was getting out of a car in front of his sister’s home in Portland when he was struck by a minivan on Feb. 23.

He suffered multiple skull and facial fractures, a moderate brain bleed on his right side and a severe bleed on the left

Marblehead’s Flanagan finishes ninth at 119th Boston Marathon

BOSTON — There isn’t anything holding Shalane Flanagan back from returning to next year’s Boston Marathon. She made it clear a year ago that she’ll continue to run her hometown race until she wins and after yesterday’s finish it would seem as though Flanagan will be back again.

The 33-year-old Marblehead native, who finished the 119th Boston Marathon in ninth place in the women’s elite race with a time of 2:27.47, hasn’t lived in Massachusetts for several years but still considers herself a hometown girl.

“I love you Boston. Thank you for getting me through a tough run. So proud of the Americans, especially Desiree Linden,” Flanagan tweeted after the race.

It was the fifth year in a row that a Kenyan has won the women’s Boston Marahton. This time it was Caroline Rotich, who wore the gold olive wreaths around her head after clocking in at 2:24.55. The winner battled down Boylston

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Gets A Power Bump From ‘Late Model Racecraft’: Video

A Houston, Texas-based tuning and racing company named “Late Model Racecraft” has made a kit for the 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 which boosts RWHP on their test car past 700. The company claims that they are the first aftermarket tuner to do so, and we have no reason to disbelieve it.

The YouTube video below shows a dynamometer run, where the computer prints a (ludicrous, ungodly) figure of 743 HP to the screen. Assuming a very low, 10 percent driveline loss, that would mean about 826 HP at the crank. The Z06 has been fitted with the company’s Stage II Kit, but details as to what that encompasses are nil.

And looking at the company’s website, it doesn’t seem as though they’ve begun offering any kits for the Corvette C7 for sale, let alone the supercharged Z06 model. Nevertheless, this dyno run is absolutely all sorts of exciting, not only
