Can Amazon’s Purchase of Whole Foods Make Grocery Delivery Affordable?’s purchase of upscale grocer Whole Foods Market Inc. could be the first step toward making fresh food and grocery delivery affordable.

Whether or not the online marketplace is successful depends on its ability to leverage inbound produce logistics, one of the hardest codes to crack in the shipping industry.

“Food delivery by nature is an extremely low-margin, logistically complex business, especially given the perishable nature of the items,” said Natan Reddy, an analyst at CB Insights. “It might take a company like Amazon with extremely vast resources and economies of scale to be able to solve this puzzle.”

While Amazon has yet to conquer the grocery sector, its ability to disrupt is well established. The company built the pillars of e-commerce, rapid delivery and free shipping, and in the process altered consumer shopping patterns.

“Look at the network of distribution centers and fulfillment centers they have created in relatively short

Used Truck Market Shows Signs of Improvement

Disparate factors indicate the used truck market could be starting to stabilize, according to several reports issued over the past week.

“It’s generally been a little bit better year-over-year,” said Steve Clough, president of Arrow Truck Sales Inc., in a conference call hosted by Stifel Financial Corp. on Tuesday. “There have been small increases and I think in most people’s businesses this seems to bear out.”

There’s been a general improvement in the trucking industry.

The American Trucking Associations’ seasonally adjusted May For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, which measures demand for freight services, rose 6.5 percent from April, the trade group said Tuesday.

Such freight growth will continue to drive up the demand for more trucks, Clough said.

The index is up 4.8 percent compared with May 2016, the largest year-over-year gain since November.

“Truck tonnage snapped back in May,” said Bob Costello, chief economist for ATA. “One month does not make a trend,

Freightliner, Peterbilt Trucks Lead 5-Year Retained Value Awards

Freightliner and Peterbilt models typically beat their competitors in how much their used trucks are worth after five years, according to a company that tracks residual values.

Each brand won two categories in Price Digests’ inaugural Highest Retained Value Awards. The truck price information company selected the nine category winners by reviewing more than 50,000 resales of the most popular equipment series in 2018. Price Digests tracks these transactions to set residual values.

Finance companies that lend money to buy used trucks and insurance companies that cover them rely on residual data in deciding the best investments, said Sam Giffin, director of business insights for EquipmentWatch Price Digests.

“These awards are to raise awareness of what we’ve been seeing in the data and to create transparency in the marketplace,” he told

Using year-over-year depreciation for hundreds of models, the trucks were sorted by their relative popularity,

Fred Gibb’s 1968 Chevrolet COPO Nova SS To Be Auctioned Off By Mecum

Nearly every classic vehicle to cross the block at prestigious auctions, such as Mecum and Barrett-Jackson, is aesthetically pleasing. But, as we’ve said before, every once in a while a car comes around that truly hits home, for some reason or another. In the case of this 1968 Chevrolet COPO Nova SS, every box is checked off. It’s got the looks, the historically rich context, and our favorite part – the performance.

This COPO Nova SS is number 4 of 50 ordered by Fred Gibb. He and Vince Piggins were interested in coupling the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission with L78-equipped Novas in order to create a winning combination for the NHRA Super Stock competition. Thus, Piggins submitted a request for 50 examples (NHRA’s minimum required number) of the proposed machine. Gibb would be responsible for buying and reselling these Novas. Fortunately for him, he knew a

Car yard deals probed for fraud

A shareholder of a Hamilton car yard is believed to have skipped the country owing hundreds of thousands of dollars after allegedly claiming false credit on luxury cars.

The Waikato police fraud unit has confirmed it is investigating a series of credit contracts between clients of Karpai Cars and Motor Trade Finance. However, the man at the centre of the allegations, Angus Ritchie, denies there is a problem, although he would not comment.

He was a minority shareholder in Hamilton’s Karpai Cars. An associate has claimed Mr Ritchie used the names of friends and family members to apply for bogus finance on vehicles. The finance is also alleged to be well above what the cars were worth.

Documents obtained by the Waikato Times show financing on one car for $52,671 but the car recently sold for $9000.

Celebrities and their cars

Cars are signifiers, perhaps the quickest and most effective way of telling the wider world about yourself.

Even driving something modest is doing just that, particularly if everyone knows you could – if you wished – drive anything you please.

According to the new marketing tome The Consuming Instinct, by Gad Saad, a scientific study has shown that a man’s testosterone level actually increases while driving a Porsche.

”Much of what we do as consumers is ultimately related to sex,” Saad writes. That could explain a lot about what’s out there mixing with the traffic.

Here are a few cars owned or driven by famous people, old and new, recent and late. Who are they signalling what to? We’ll let you make that decision yourself.

John Lennon – Rolls-Royce

John Lennon didn’t gain his driver’s licence until 1965, when he was well into his 20s. Even after that, he didn’t drive
