Police: Making dent in gang violence may take years

Police Chief Alan DeNaro is warning that it could be years before marked improvement is seen.in the city’s gang problem, after two recent murders in Haverhill.

While about 100 residents gathered downtown to discuss safety in their city at a vigil, DeNaro told the City Council at last week’s meeting that his department is working on securing probable cause to arrest a suspect in the murder of 40-year-old Jeffrey Larkin, and is confident in the district attorney’s ability to prosecute the suspect in the murder of 20-year-old Nike Colon. Both men were shot to death within two weeks of each other.

“The city was shaken when we had two horrible homicides take place within a couple-week period,” said Mayor James Fiorentini.

DeNaro promised that he will implement the new gang unit in the Police Department regardless of what he receives in terms of funding next year, and spoke of “nontraditional” policing techniques that
