Shalane Flanagan race returns to Marblehead

MARBLEHEAD — Shalane Flanagan, a town native who recently won the New York City Marathon, along with the Marblehead Track Association, will present the 2nd annual Shalane Flanagan High School Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 25.

The event, which runs concurrently with the fourth annual Back the Track 5K, takes place at the Marblehead Community Center on 10 Humphrey Street. The Team Challenge is open to any current high school aged student-athletes graduating between 2018 and 2021. Teams consist of three boys or three girls from the same city or town.

In addition to bragging rights, teams compete for the Flanagan Cup, a traveling trophy awarded to the top boys’ and girls’ teams based on cumulative time. The winning teams ‘own’ the Cup for a year and return it in 2018, at which point it will be up for grabs. There is no limit to the number of teams a single town can enter,
