Peabody’s Carter helps US team win gold, takes individual silver at fencing world championships

Jane Hall Carter has done it all in the world of fencing, highlighted by her capturing a national championship at the age of 15.

But the Peabody native had been away from international competition for several years, so Carter didn’t know how she’d fare after being asked to take part with the U.S. National Veterans team at the World Championships in Colorado Springs.

As it turned out, Carter pleasantly surprised even herself by helping her squad capture a gold medal. She also garnered an individual silver medal in foil.

“Friends told me I should try it out, but I had no idea what to expect,” said Carter, who in turning 50 in March became eligible for this event for the first time. “I went to a local competition and won, then took second at an event in Baltimore.
