5 Series in Its Sights
In the past the CTS was a ‘tweener, larger than a BMW 3 Series but smaller than the larger 5 Series. With the entry-level ATS now in Cadillac’s portfolio, GM engineers had the freedom to size and position the 2014 Cadillac CTS more squarely against the 5 Series. Thus the 2014 CTS is larger than the outgoing generation, stretching 4.2 inches longer and riding on a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase. It’s longer, in fact, than both the 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, with a wheelbase that’s right between the two.
Whereas the current 5 Series is derived from its larger 7 Series brother, the 2014 CTS is built on the lighter ATS platform. The result is that the 5 Series is porkier than it should be, and the CTS is more efficient with its mass. It’s hard to describe the

LAWRENCE — The woman in charge of selling excess real estate owned by the city recently lost her driver’s license for drunken driving. The license suspension raises questions about whether she also may lose the $55,000 job she has held for almost three years.
Laiza St. Onge, 35, lost her New Hampshire driver’s license sometime before June 11, when the state Division of Motor Vehicles included her name on a list of people whose licenses it recently revoked for driving while intoxicated. The department did not respond Wednesday to a request for details of St. Onge’s conviction, including the date she was arrested, where the arrest occurred and whether the revocation allows St. Onge to drive to work.
Mayor Daniel Rivera said St. Onge has been reporting to work since losing her license, but could not say how she’s been arriving from her home in Salem, New Hampshire, or whether she’s continued to

BOSTON — An Andover lawmaker is calling for the MBTA to cancel its contract for WiFi upgrades along commuter rail routes if community impacts are not considered during a monthlong review that the transit agency announced Friday.
The MBTA on Friday said it would conduct a 30-day assessment of the project approved in 2014 to install equipment intended to provide improved internet and cellular service.
“There will be no construction of poles or other infrastructure during this review, which will include comments and other feedback from customers, elected and appointed officials, and residents,” MBTA officials said in a statement.
The notice came four days after Andover and Manchester-by-the-Sea residents raised concerns to the MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board, saying the installation of communication towers would interfere with the looks of historic communities and could affect home values.
Sen. Barbara L’Italien, an Andover Democrat who has been working with local officials in hopes of

There’s no one more inventive than a Texas pitmaster, but one Garland barbecue enthusiast may have built the most unique smoker of all time using the body of a 1988 Cadillac DeVille.
Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn unearthed the Craigslist listing for the glorious smoker, which has a capacity of 1,300 pounds. “This is a custom homemade BBQ trailer grill,” reads the listing. “Great for parties, weddings, or family unions [sic].” The smoker is also mounted to a trailer hitch, and the front seats have been replaced with racks perfect for holding ribs and brisket.
For barbecue obsessives who just can’t live without this totally customized Caddy smoker, it’s still totally for sale. Its owner is only asking an entirely reasonable $1,800 (or best offer, so maybe there’s some haggling room), but don’t be surprised if this gem doesn’t get snapped up in a

The 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser is an archaic enigma. It’s certainly outclassed on-road by most of its rivals, and yet it’s something nearly all of us would park in our garages.
We’ve rated it a 6.4 out of 10 overall, but there’s more to the 2018 Land Cruiser’s six decade heritage than just numbers. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
It’s hugely capable off-road and has an enviable reputation for reliability even under the harshest conditions. Those attributes have long made Land Cruisers a staple in the most remote, war-torn regions of the world, but they don’t really come into play in suburbia.
This year, the Land Cruiser is largely unchanged after a hefty refresh in 2016. Its rear-seat entertainment system gets with the times and becomes a stand-alone option instead of standard (since most kids are attached to their tablets these days) and its exterior mirrors

Police across Massachusetts are searching for a man who shot a woman to death, according to investigators.
Officials asked the public to watch for Louis Starkey III, but stressed he is considered armed and dangerous. They said he also fired a shotgun at a man after killing the woman.
State police issued a “Be On The Lookout” order, or BOLO, on Wednesday, noting that Starkey is wanted for murder and assault to murder with a dangerous weapon.
Starkey was last seen driving a red Lincoln MKX with Vermont license plate QLTMKR.
Anyone with information about Starkey’s whereabouts is urged to dial 911 or 508-820-2121.
The Northwestern District Attorney’s office said Amanda Glover, 48, was shot and killed Wednesday in Wendell, Massachusetts. Investigators believe Glover and Starkey knew each other, but there was no information available from police on a possible motive.
Police in Chicopee believe Starkey later went to a trucking company there, where he used a shotgun to
