LAWRENCE — After two fatal shootings in two days, the city’s police chief is calling for a special prosecutor to oversee “all serious violent crimes committed in Lawrence.”
Police Chief James Fitzpatrick also convened an emergency meeting Monday evening with high-ranking members of his department and Massachusetts State Police after the explosive weekend in an already violent month.
Six homicides have occurred in Lawrence so far in 2017. And in April, police responded to 10 incidents involving shots fired.
Police have “implemented a number of tactics and initiatives throughout the city in an effort to curb a recent string of violent incidents but this has not seen lasting effects,” Fitzpatrick said.
The weekend killings are believed to be connected to drugs and domestic violence, police said.
Early Saturday, Abdul Lopez, 35, of Revere was killed in a shooting at Lowell Street and Broadway at 2:18 a.m. An officer attempted to revive Lopez, who was later pronounced dead.
